As the Curator of the Great Cats, Andean Bear and Kids’ Farm areas of the Smithsonian’s National Zoo, Craig Saffoe is responsible for the overall care and management of 17 species and more than 50 individual animals. Starting as an intern in 1994 and working his way up to Animal Keeper, Biologist and now Curator. Saffoe leads a team that has been incredibly successful at breeding large carnivores, boasting multiple successful litters of lions, tigers and Andean bears.
Over 300 professionals across the U.S. are putting visibility and representation in the zoo and aquarium field at the forefront of their work, focusing on approaches such as networking, outreach, mentorship, and professional development
