As the director of education at the Smithsonian Latino Center, I want to make sure caregivers and teachers have fun learning opportunities to share with families and students. Today, I'm sharing a list curated just for you to help you celebrate Latinidad and build your connections.
We at the Latino Center work with our colleagues across the Smithsonian to make sure that Latino communities and cultures are represented and celebrated throughout the Institution. We have the honor and privilege of telling our communities' stories and histories together at the nation's museums. We look forward to building community through this blog and getting to know your communities and your needs. So, let's get to it. Here is this month's post full of fun, musical, and memorable activities for all.
1. Looking to do something with all of those boxes of old photographs?
This project offers the kids a unique opportunity to learn a little family history and the vital role that photos play in documenting and telling the family story. Download the "Create-It Family Photograph Collage Activity!" to learn about archiving, creating collages, and telling the story of meaningful objects or photographs in your family collection! 2. Want a building activity for your crafty scout or engineer-in-training?
Check out this amazing activity that focuses on suspension bridges, such as the Q'eswachaka Bridge. Cool fact: this Q'eswachaka Bridge is made out of braided grass! Learn more.
3. How about channeling your inner musician?
April is Jazz Appreciation Month, and we're celebrating with Latin Jazz! Whether you have formal training (remember those years of piano and flute lessons?) or just like to sing in the privacy of your home, you'll enjoy this wonderful concert from Latin Jazz musician John Santos. Listen now. For a more hands-on experience, learn how musical instruments are made and create your own using simple materials such as straws and a latex glove! Get the guide.
4. Are you the poetic type?
We have a collection of Latino poets to help you observe National Poetry Month in April! These poets share stories of cultural connection, identity, tradition, and family. Start with the beautiful poetry from a few select Salvadorian-American poets. Next, try your hand at writing a poem that celebrates your cultural home with our handy activity book.
5. How old is Earth Day?
Earth Day started in 1970, which means we're celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2020! In honor of Earth Day, watch a video from our friends at the Smithsonian Fort Pierce Marine Station to learn how you can help protect our marine environments. Watch our "¡Descubra! Meet the Science Expert" video.
6. Are you ready to unwind after a long day?
Coloring books are an entertaining way to relax while learning something new. We even encourage you to color outside the lines! Kids of all ages can take a journey through Central America's past and learn about the people from this region with this bilingual coloring and activity book.
