Monday, November 1: Smithsonian Dia de los Muertos Festival: A Second Life Experience!
To celebrate the Day of the Dead, the Smithsonian Latino Center presents a Dia de los Muertos 3D online experience illustrating Latino customs and beliefs dating from ancient Mesoamerica to those practiced today. Explore and learn about Latino cultural heritage through this holiday for honoring the dead and the cycle of life and death. Tuesday, November 2: FONZ Photo Club
If you’re a shutterbug with a penchant for snapping shots of critters, come on out to the National Zoo and participate in the Friends Of the National Zoo (FONZ) photo club’s monthly meeting. Share your photos, hear from speakers and learn about new techniques that may help you capture that picture perfect moment. You must already be a FONZ member to participate. Wednesday, November 3: The Talking Drum
In this interactive program, Joseph Ngwa, ancestral master drummer from Cameroon, Africa, demonstrates how the talking drum (timdene or dundun) is used to transmit messages and meaning through various sounds. Thursday, November 4: Beautiful Darling: The Life and Times of Candy Darling, Andy Warhol Superstar
Candy Darling was an actress who rose to prominence in the films of Andy Warhol and was muse to Lou Reed—but leukemia tragically claimed her at age 29. In this 2010 documentary, actress Chloë Sevigny reads excerpts from Candy's letters and diaries while interviews with those who knew her best tell the story of her brilliant-but-brief life. This special screening at the Hirshhorn will be followed by a question and answer session with the film's director James Rasin. Friday, November 5: Friday Gallery Talk: Guillermo Kuitca
