Monday, April 5: Easter Monday
Easter Monday at the Zoo has been a long standing African American family tradition in Washington, DC. The day is rife with food and activities, which include an Easter egg hunt, crafts, live musical entertainment, and of course, lots of opportunities to get to know the animals a little better. See the Zoo website for a full schedule of events. (Representatives from the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, the first national museum to be devoted exclusively to the documentation of African American life, will be on hand to showcase and discuss their sustainable and green building design. Tuesday, April 6: $9.99
An unemployed youth stumbles across an advertisement promising that the meaning of life can be his for one easy installment of $9.99. As he goes to share his discovery with the neighbors in his apartment complex, he learns of their own pursuits of happiness. Although this is a stop motion animated movie, this isn't the stuff of Saturday morning cartoons and food commercials. Simply put: it's rated R, so you might not want the kiddies to come out for this one. Free. Freer, 7:00 PM.
Wednesday, April 7: Ask an Expert: One World Rising: 1970 and the First “Earth Day”
Mercy, mercy me—things ain't what they used to be. The earth is taking a beating due to the ways in which we live and it's imperative that we learn how to become stewards of the environment as best we can. To promote awareness and encourage people to take an active part in preserving the planet, come celebrate Earth Day, which was created 40 years ago this month, at the Air and Space Museum. At a lunchtime lecture, learn the back story on this ecological celebration. Free. Air and Space Museum, 12:00-12:15 PM.
Thursday, April 8: Everything you always wanted to know about the making of a video installation: Independent Film Series
Are you an aspiring artist yearning to put forth a video installation of your very own? Get the lowdown from someone who's done it before. Come enjoy this film which documents the whole creative process behind a piece by performance artist Marina Abramovic. Free. Hirshhorn, 8:00 PM.
Friday, April 9: Bucky Pizzaelli
For more than six decades, jazz guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli has had a stellar career, playing with the who's who of musical greats from Benny Goodman to Les Paul, not to mention being a part of the band on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Today, this musical legend is leading a guitarist workshop at the American History Museum. Free. American History Museum, 12:00-2:00 PM.
