Friday, April 9: Hirshhorn After Hours: A Special Evening of Art, Music, and Cocktails
Come unwind from a busy week by enjoying an evening of art, music and libations at the Hirshhorn. In one of the hippest happenings in DC, come enjoy performances by Bill Shannon and his dance crew The Step Fenz along with "Brian the Wizard" Coxx's DJ prowess. Also enjoy curator-led tours of two of the Hirshhorn's temporary shows, ColorForms and Josef Albers: Innovation and Inspiration. Tickets are required and must be purchased in advance. Rates are $18 general admission, free to Annual Circle Members. Hirshhorn, 8:00 PM-12:00 AM.
Saturday, April 10: Family Jazz Day
In honor of Jazz Appreciation Month, the American History Museum is joining forces with the National Park Service to provide you with a day chock full of performances and discussions that will heighten your appreciation for the art form. The following events will be happening at Fort Dupont Park in Anacostia:
1 PM – 1:45 PM: “Jazz & New Orleans” Family Workshop with Delfeayo Marsalis
2 PM: “Jazz: Music of the Civil War Era” Lecture: American History Museum curator Susan Ostroff discusses the early roots of jazz music during the Civil War era, its evolution and impact on the culture.
2:30 PM: Performance: Delfeayo Marsalis, a member of New Orleans’ famed jazz family, celebrates Jazz Appreciation Month in Washington, D.C., with a concert and jazz cultural history presentation at the National Park Service’s “Jazz Family Day” events in Fort Dupont Circle Park in Anacostia.
All events are free. Fort Dupont Park, 1:00-4:00 PM.
Sunday, April 11: Artists’ Talk: Nakashima and Maruyama
Accomplished furniture makers Mira Nakashima—daughter of the legendary George Nakashima—and Wendy Maruyama will discuss their artwork and influences. After the talk, Maruyama invites you to participate in "The Tag Project: E.O. 9066," a work inspired by Japanese internment during World War II. Free. Renwick Gallery, 2:00 PM.
