Friday, September 2 Tarantula Feedings
Come see the Natural History Museum’s resident tarantula population enjoy mealtime. Museum volunteers put on feeding demonstrations daily, where you can touch and hold the Insect Zoo’s creatures while watching them chow down on crickets and other tasty treats. Tarantula feedings take place year-round from Tuesday to Friday at 10:30, 11:30 and 1:30, and at 11:30, 12:30 and 1:30 on Saturday and Sunday. Free. Natural History Museum
Saturday, September 3 Book Signings at Air and Space
On Saturday, get books signed by a pair of legendary pilots. Dave “Bio” Baranek signs copies of TOPGUN Days: Dogfighting, Cheating Death, and Hollywood Glory as One of America’s Best Fighter Jocks. from noon to 4 p.m, and George Norfleet will autograph his book A Pilot’s Journey: Memoirs of a Tuskegee Airman, Curtis Christopher Robinson from noon to 5 p.m. Both events are Free. Air and Space Museum, outside Museum Store.
Sunday, September 4 Harry Potter
This is the last chance to see Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 in IMAX 3D at the Smithsonian. Stop in the museum lobby beforehand to see the actual costumes worn by Harry and Neville Longbottom in the movie! Then watch the epic’s finale, culminating with the battle between the good and evil forces of the wizarding world. (PG-13, 135 min.) Showtimes are 6:30 p.m. and 9:15 p.m., tickets are $15. Monday, September 5 Celebrate Labor Day!
All Smithsonian museums are open today, though no special events are scheduled. To celebrate Labor Day, listen to “Classic Labor Songs from Smithsonian Folkways,” the institution’s own music label. This album features stirring songs from Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Joe Glazer, the Almanac Singers, and others used in the American Labor Movement, calling for fair wages and treatment for workers.
